The Del Amitri Concert, September 29, 1997
Copenhagen, Denmark
by June Jorgensen
It was a cold and rainy Monday evening. I had been at work, and the day
had gone so slowly. It was hard to wait.
Finally it happened. I had to leave work at 7 PM and go meet two of my
friends. I was very excited because something special was waiting ahead.
My first Del Amitri concert.
When I was visiting my friend Lori in California this summer, she told me
that she was going to go to 4 of the Dels concerts on the West coast and
I was invited if I wanted to go. Unfortunately I couldn't, because I had
to go back to Denmark to work, but, believe me, I tried everything. One
day she wrote me an e-mail telling me that Del Amitri was going to play
in Copenhagen on September 29. I was thrilled and called to buy a ticket
right away. I didn't really care if I had to go alone or if someone was
with me. The only thing that mattered was that I would see Del Amitri.
It didn't really take a lot to convince two of my friends that they had
to come and share this musical experience with me--they were game.
When September 29 arrived, I was as thrilled and excited as a little kid
waiting to open his Christmas presents. I was walking around all day
with a smile and telling everybody that I was going to have a great time
that night.
And I certainly was..... I arrived at Vega at 8.45 with my friends and
went to the back to listen to the warm up band. They were OK and I think
they were quite popular here in Denmark, but I just kept yelling Del
Amitri, Del Amitri every time they didn't play, and I think they got
pretty tired of that.
At 9.50 PM they finally stopped playing, and I was jumping up and down
yelling Del Amitri, Del Amitri. I am telling you everybody was staring
at me thinking who let her out of the loony bin. Just before Del Amitri
was supposed to get on stage I went all the way down in front -- leaving
my two friends in the back because they thought the sound was better back
there -- ha, what do they know? They missed the great experience of
watching the band up close.
At 10.15 it happened: the lights went out and a voice filled the speakers
and suddenly, there was Justin. It is soooo hard to explain how I felt.
I started to jump up and down again, and as soon as they started to play
I was sold. They started out with Some Other Sucker's Parade and then
Just Like A Man.
After that they played about 13 more songs and I was singing and dancing
along to all of them. When they played my two favorites, Not Where It's
At and Last To Know, I almost started to cry for joy.
When they were done with their last song, Stone Cold Sober, they went out
and everybody started to clap and stamp the floor to get them back out.
That happened twice where they played Medicine, Be My Downfall, Driving,
and Kiss This Thing Goodbye.
When the lights came on I went to the back and found my friends, and back
there I stopped Del Amitri's light man and asked him if I could have the
set list, and he said, "Sure, you certainly deserve it with all the
jumping and screaming." It didn't even embarrass me, instead it made me
kind of proud that he had noticed. My friends also told me that they had
been able to see me all the way in front because my long blond hair was
flying all over the place.
I don't really remember anything around me in the period of time between
10.15 - 11.55 PM when Dels were playing, but I know that they gave me the
greatest musical experience I have ever had. It was really obvious that
they enjoyed themselves and had fun on stage. I really think they were a
little surprised that people in Denmark knew so many of their songs.
I never got to meet the band, but it was mainly because I was too tired
to hang around and wait at the tour bus. Maybe it will happen next time.
Who knows? I definitely hope it's not the last time they will visit our
little country.
